Miyuki-dori Shopping Street, which runs in a straight line from JR Himeji Station to Himeji Castle, is filled with a variety of restaurants and stores where you can enjoy eating and drinking. One of the most popular is Himejikambeedou, which specializes in shaved ice made from natural ice. Shaved ice is very popular in Japan nowadays. This store is especially famous for its original and creative shaved ice, which attracts many people, especially tourists.

In Japan, shaved ice is usually eaten in summer. This store offers shaved ice all year round, hoping that not only Japanese people but also foreign tourists can enjoy this traditional Japanese culture. It is so popular that in summer (July-August) there is a long line in front of the store.

It is said that the ice determines the texture of the shaved ice. The store uses natural ice from Yatsugatake in the Southern Alps of Yamanashi Prefecture, which the owner is very fond of. This rare ice can only be obtained using traditional Japanese techniques. The use of natural ice produces shaved ice that melts in your mouth. You will be surprised at how quickly the ice melts in your mouth when you take a bite!

There are about 7 to 10 types of shaved ice on the menu. The syrups are made without using any additives or flavorings, and the original flavors of the fruits can be felt. The “Strawberry Mascal (freshly crushed strawberries & mascarpone espuma ice)” (available only from July to October) is made with sweet and sour strawberry syrup and mascarpone cheese-flavored espuma cream. Popular among foreigners is the “Matcha Strawberry Mille-feuille,” which is made of matcha powder that resembles grass. The shaved ice is filled with Awaji milk syrup and covered with organic, pesticide-free matcha from Kyoto, making it a uniquely Japanese shaved ice. The ice is filled with homemade custard. You can enjoy the change of taste by pouring strawberry sauce over the ice.

Pancakes are served from around October. From late January to May, you can enjoy “Strawberry Field Pancakes” and from October to May, “Brûlée Pancakes” and other limited-time-only fluffy pancakes. The “Brûlée Pancakes” are brûléed in front of your eyes using a burner. Please be prepared to take a video.

This popular restaurant has been introduced in magazines and on TV, and is often visited by celebrities. It is often crowded, especially on weekends, but it is worth the wait in line. From October to March every year, you can also enjoy pancakes made with plenty of fruit. If you visit Himeji, please come and visit us.

Harimayachaho is a Japanese tea store with a history of over 75 years. Harimayachaho sells a variety of products using Japanese green tea and matcha in order to make Japanese tea more familiar to people. Shiromaeten, located right in front of Himeji Castle, is a store based on the concept of a “green tea stand in Himeji,” and is so popular among foreign customers that there are even days when the only customers in the entire day are from overseas.

The store sells a wide variety of Japanese teas carefully selected from all over Japan, and offers sweets and drinks that use a lot of high-grade matcha. The “Soft Serve” is especially popular among tourists, who can enjoy matcha in a casual manner! The most popular item is the “Soft Serve Mix,” which consists of two types of soft-serve ice cream, the less-sweet “thick matcha soft-serve ice cream” and the savory “hojicha soft-serve ice cream,” both served in a spiral shape. Another popular item is the “Green tea,” which is made by adding sugar to matcha green tea to give it a mellow taste. The rich taste and aroma of matcha, which can only be experienced at a long-established Japanese tea shop, will surely bring back fond memories. Be sure to stop by for a break from sightseeing at Himeji Castle.

An English menu is available, so you can feel at ease when ordering. Tea leaves, tea bags, and other products perfect for souvenirs are also available for purchase, so check it out. If you have any questions about how to drink tea or the different types of tea, ask the store staff. They will be happy to help you. In Japan, drinking tea to relax is called “Hokkori”. It is good to go home and try “Hokkori”.

WARABI-MOCHI Specialty Shop KADOFUJI is a specialty store for Warabi-mochi located in the shopping arcade in front of Himeji Station. You can taste “Hon Warabi-mochi,” one of the traditional Japanese sweets. Warabi-mochi is a confectionery made from the crushed root of the warabi plant. It is one of the Japanese sweets that have been familiar to Japanese people for a long time. Its thick, soft, and cool texture is very appealing.

If it is your first time to try warabimochi, we recommend the “Three Kinds of Kobune (Comparison Set).” You can compare three kinds of warabimochi covered with kinako (soybean flour) and sesame, “Fukuyutaka,” “deep roasted,” and “black sesame,” all made with 100% domestic kinako.

Drinks containing warabimochi are also popular. The “Warabi-ita Matcha” is a popular drink that is especially popular among foreigners. It is a new and unexpected combination of Uji green tea from Kyoto, mixed with milk, and warabimochi. The “Warabita” is also available in coffee, strawberry, and hojicha (roasted green tea) flavors. The milk can be changed to soy milk (+50 yen).

The store has an English menu for your convenience. The staff is actively engaged in English communication, so feel free to talk to them if you have any questions. For foreign tourists only, if you take a picture of the store’s products and upload it to SNS, you will receive an original sticker as a present! Be sure to take a photo for a photojournalistic look.

The interior of the store is a Japanese-style space reminiscent of a Japanese garden. There is also an eat-in space, so be sure to stop by for a break during your sightseeing in Himeji.

HIMEJI DANGO HOKKORISAN is a specialty rice cake store located on Miyuki-dori, a shopping street that runs from Himeji Station to Himeji Castle. You can enjoy fluffy rice cakes made every morning in the store. The rice cakes are sold on skewers, making it easy to eat with one hand, and sightseeing while eating is also recommended.

A popular memu among foreigners is “Himeji Big Grilled Mitarashi Rice Cake”. Mitarashi is a sweet and salty sauce thickened with soy sauce and sugar. It has three rice cakes on a skewer that are 1.5 to 2 times larger than regular ones.

The colorful “Sen-no-irodori” is also recommended. You can buy a single rice cake, but we recommend the box containing all kinds of rice cakes.

The unique drink with rice cake on top of a cup is also popular. There are two flavors, “matcha” and “strawberry,” and the matcha flavor is popular among foreigners. It tastes refreshingly bitter and is recommended to dip rice cakes in it.

At the store, cheerful and fun staff will welcome you with a smile. English menus are also available, so feel free to stop by for a Japanese sweet during your sightseeing tour.
